EQUINE MASSAGE By MAXINE
|
|
EquiTouch Certified equine
massage for your horses. Injury prevention, improved health, and
performance enhancement are some of the benefits of equine massage.
Multiple horse discounts. |

I am an RN of some 30+ years
of practice. As I raised and trained my own horses,
I saw stiffness and "Lag" in their stride. I wanted to be able to help
them and also to be able to help support my horse business. I took an Equine massage course from EquiTouch, and became certified as a
CSMT 2. They taught me the anatomy and musculature of horses, some
massage technique, but nothing about reading a horse's response to what
was being done, nothing much about assessing gait and what muscle groups
would need to be assessed for what problems. I was frustrated and began
an odyssey of teaching myself what I wanted to know. What works? What
doesn't? Why? HOW does it work? In my personal life, I am holistically
oriented in my personal health care as I have found modern medicine
looks to pills or surgery to "fix" problems. I wanted a more
comprehensive understanding of health and treatment. |
|
|
I found many minor lameness
could be treated quickly and easily with chiropractic and massage. I was
amazed by the results I was getting in terms of improved attitude,
increased stride and willingness to perform a task I asked. I found the
vast majority of resistance to tasks was due to muscular pain.
|
| My horses started
coming to me and putting my hands where they wanted me to work.
When they were happy, they would put my hands in the next spot.
They would sigh, lick, chew, fall asleep on me. They would leave
their food and grain for an opportunity to be massaged. I found
behavioral problems melting away. Their behavior was trying to
tell me "I am in Pain!" I need help! Flinching, twitching,
avoidance, bucking, head tossing, sour attitude all melted away
with massage. When massage alone doesn't counter-act soreness,
then I go to an equine chiropractor I trust. When I don't get
results there, I go to a vet I trust. Each time I need to assess
just what needs to be done. What does my intuition say? Vet?
Yes! Then I go. Nooo...try this. I ask the horse. What do you
need? Horses communicate in pictures and they tell me what I
need to do for them. I also need to send pictures to them so
they understand what I need from them...This is easier with
other's horses than my own. I have been able to get amazing
results for my equine partners. |
 |
|
|
I have given seminars for
horse owners to be able to work on their horses and have gotten
excellent feed back. "I learned so much." "I can't believe how much
better my horse moves!" "I had no idea she/he was so sore!?" "That gimp
in her front leg is so much better!" Now I know why she is stumbling and
doesn't want to go!"
|
| I worked on Mary
Semarack's horse at Aspen Hill Ranch in WI when I delivered
Lady's Sassy Champagne to her. I left, she hired 3 other massage
people to work on the mare, but she didn't get any results! She
called me to set up a seminar and we arranged to have a
professional DVD done of my work. |
 |
Rob Hess of Any & All Video in
Madison WI
was the professional videographer we hired. He was easy to work
with and we produced an excellent DVD, "Horse Massage Made
Simple". This DVD is packed with 3 hours
of information to help you work with your horse. It reviews
basic equine conformation and general muscle groups. A variety
of horses are worked with from a yearling, a pony, a Missouri Foxtrotter, a
Warmblood dressage horse to a draft horse. Assessing each horse,
what to look for, how to treat each horse, how to read the
muscles and how to work with them. The chapters on the DVD allow
you to go to the section you want to review before going to work
with your horse. Stretching, how to gauge the stretch, and what
it will do to help your horse. When NOT to stretch. |
Equine
Stress control, as taught to me by Barbara of Harmony Horse
Rescue, is given an introduction. This technique I found in my
odyssey to rehabilitate A Whole Lot O' Trouble (AKA Ebony).
Nothing I was doing was getting me to safe results working with
her MIND. ESCT works to get the horse's mind out of the fight or
flight mode to the thinking mode. It helps to short circuit
negative behavior pattern we want to change. I am not sure I
could have saved her without ESCT. She was just too dangerous to
be around. She needed to learn to trust people and to look to
people for leadership. She didn't have a mean bone in her body,
but was constantly in fight or flight....especially flight.
People were just not in her consciousness. They were danger. She
is an elegant, beautiful, flowing mover and had produced one
colt out of Casey that was in the top 1% for quality. Her issues
really came to the fore when I started riding her. ESCT is
responsible for getting her turned around and on her way to
being a safe, fantastic horse to ride. I hope this information
and demonstration will help you with your equine partner.

Another section is an introduction to the use of essential oils in
horses. The horses choose which oils will help them for muscle soreness,
balancing their energies, etc. It is amazing when a horse wants to grab
the oil from your hand and literally slurp it up. I use only
Young
Living Essential oils. They are 100% pure and organically grown. |

|
The format for this DVD is casual and informative in a way that will
enable you to evaluate your horses' sore areas and to help her/him
overcome blocks and attitudes that limit your partnership. Instead of
evading a ride, joining with you for a ride. A well ridden horse will
have fewer muscular issues than one without a balanced and confident
rider. It is amazing what our Equine partners put up with to be with us.
Think of this: after a winter has gone by, you decide to dig your
garden. Ohhh, sore muscles. Doesn't feel so good, right? Your horse goes
out for the weekend ride, your youngster is starting under saddle, you
are gearing up for the show season, the youngsters get in a pasture
squabble and take a tumble. All of these lead to sore muscles. Do you
want to jump right up and dig more the next day? No! Well, neither does
your horse. Each horse has certain areas of soreness, address those
before each ride and both of you will enjoy your rides more. Massage
builds a bond of trust and connection with your horse that will enable
you to enjoy and communicate on a higher, more satisfying level. |

My Granddaughters' 600# pony had surgery at CSU in 2006. The Drs. cut both tendons in each of his front legs, due to severe bilateral forelimb flexor contracture (founder). Bobo had both front legs in casts for months, with cast changes
every 6 weeks. He wasn't able to get up on his own, and needed constant care. The casts were eventually changed to splints. He showed a lot of improvement in a year, however he was putting a lot of stress on his hind quarters and hind legs trying to keep weight off his front legs. His rear end muscles became hard as rocks. He
didn't want to get up or walk at all. I was afraid I was going to have to put him down. A friend gave me Maxine's phone number. After Maxine visited Bobo twice, the results were amazing. Now, two years later, Bobo is doing great. He gets an occassional massage just to keep him relaxed. Maxine doesn't hurry and spends the necessary time to fully massage the entire horse. I am thankful that I found her, and I'm sure
Bobo is too. Eloise Kaiser Brighton, Co.

Hello Maxine,
I received your DVD a few weeks ago and have a question. The tapping you do
on the DVD- where did you learn that technique? I've read the EFT manual,
briefly heard Allen Pogue talk about it and
J.P. Giacomini, but haven't found detailed info on 'where' to tap. I've
heard it is at the end of the meridians, also on the acupressure points.
Hopefully you can point me in a direction to learn more. I like your massage
DVD- lot's of good info and seemingly- the info I was missing. Your approach
helped me become more hands on- to understand what I was feeling and seeing.
Thanks!!
Nancy Horne
