Colorado. She will bring her background in training, showing,
and promoting of the gaited horses to help you get the best gait
out of your horse. This clinic will be geared toward gait
improvement for the pleasure rider. The next day, Debbie
Garfield will give private, hourly lessons at the reduced price
of $45.
Joining this year for
the first time will be Maxine Doner. Maxine will demonstrate
her massage techniques on Saturday, and will offer private
sessions on horse massage therapy on Sunday.

Debbie will
be giving the clinic on Saturday, then will give private lessons
on Sunday. This clinic is open to all gaited horse—Peruvian
Pasos, Paso Finos, Missouri Foxtrotters, Tennessee Walkers,
Spotted Saddle Horses, and Rocky Mountain horses. Debbie has
worked with all these breeds and will use her quiet demur to
show riders simple ways to improve their horse's gait while
riding down the trail. Clinic is designed to help equine
enthusiasts with training and riding their horses in the most
comfortable gait.
In 2006,
Debbie gave a clinic at Bookcliff Walkers and over 50 people
showed up for the clinic. Sign up early to participate in this
clinic, or come and audit the clinic to learn more about the
gaited horses.
Debbie started with TWH by going to a
clinic with Joe Webb back in the early 70's in Arkansas. Then
she worked with the Starwood Ranch in Aspen Garfield has trained
many 2 and 3 yr. olds that were part of this study. They had
close to 30 mares and 4 or 5 stallions to cross. Garfield
trained for them for almost 3 years and then they moved the
study to Utah. She has been in business for herself most of 38
years. Garfield has been to numerous clinics herself for TWH's
and learned the gaits of the other breeds from the breed
associations and shows. She has shown TWH's since 1970, and
many of the other gaited breeds shortly after that.
Garfield did
work for a padded barn 1 year to find out for herself if in fact
that you can train them without causing them pain. Garfield did
not like any part of that type of training, and have since then
only trained pleasure horses for show, trail, driving, and
versatility. Garfield has trained several Supreme Versatility
Champions, has done clinics in Canada and the US. She has shown
at the International in Tennessee 4 times and had horses place
high in most classes. A 2 yr old from the farm that she trained
for in Palisade, Co. won the 2 yr old Class at the
International. Garfield has devoted her life to training gaited
horses without gimmicks or devices all of her career except the
1 year that she trained for the padded barn. These horses are
her passion. Garfield
also served on the THWBEA Board of Directors for a total of
nine years.
Gaited horses have gained popularity with the mid-aged trail
riders that want to move out and ride without the bounce of the
trot. Many people that are recovering from back and knee
surgeries are often turning to a smooth gaited horse.
